The “Fashion Market” at Portobello Road Market (London)
Around the Westway, which is after the concrete flyover from the top of Portobello road is where the “Fashion Market” can be found. This is where the likes of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have patronised and put on the world map of fashion. Bizarrely it also seems to be perhaps one of the few remaining places in the world where buying a fur coat does not trigger a riot. This is vintage at its very best. Regardless of era and as far back as the 1920s you’d find something to add to your wardrobe.
As I read described elsewhere, this is the H.E.A.R.T (Handicraft, Entrepreneurial, Artistic, Retro and Talent) of the Portobello road market. Designer clothes, accessories, jewellery, hats, bags, sunglasses, shoes, scarves and African print clothing can all be found here. About 95% of the stall owners at portobello road are independents. Some more established, but others are young designers starting out and hoping to make a name for themselves. More recently, however, and to protests by some locals, the likes of Kurt Geiger, All Saints and American Apparel have moved into the market.
The fashion market is unique, but for me intersperced along the entire road were interesting pieces of either vintage or modern clothes and accessories. By all means do make it as far as the Westway, but do keep a keen eye out for items on your way there, some of which are displayed below.
