Photo Essay: Shining Faces
There is something fascinating about the emotions reflected in faces. Sadness, joy, confusion, mischief, irritation and elation and more can all be seen in a face. No part of our anatomies displays our emotions as strongly as our faces and emotions or feelings are triggered not in isolation but as a reaction to something – perhaps a situation, an issue or the action or emotions of another.
As I journeyed through the crowd of revellers at London’s Notting hill Carnival, I could not help but zoom in on faces. Most were shining, happy and excited faces, a reflection of the emotions of their owners. A few were nonchalant even in the midst of excitement, the music and merry making.
For me the excitement revolved around the hundreds of jerk stalls dotted around the carnival with that unmistakably Caribbean jerk spices signature infused smoke bellowing out of. This was the day that London probably had more jerk meat than the the whole of the Caribbean did.
As I journeyed on in search of my jerk chicken, a must do of mine at this annual event, I spotted a group who seemed out of place. They carried signs that proclaimed that “Jesus Christ is Lord.”
But was this group of evangelists really out of place? Did God not so love the world (not only Christians) that he gave his only son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life? Was the world not at the carnival today?
As I passed by the evangelists I refocused on the many shining faces. These are no ordinary faces. These are faces with enough power to determine whether you smiled or frowned. These are faces that could change your mood in a second. Faces that could determine whether your day stayed happy or sad. If I had stopped to listen to the evangelism group above and asked them about the significance of faces, they’d have probably pointed me to this: “The Lord makes his face to shine upon thee……” And if I ask why they’d have told me that he does so to give spiritual light in the midst of darkness. Even by our own mortal and human character we also possesses a small measure of light that we can shoot other people’s way to bring a little light into their lives.
As you ponder on the faces below, don’t forget to make yours shine today for it has the power to brighten another’s day!
