Backpacking from Accra to Cape Coast: Dawn at the beach
I woke up early to make my way to the beach to capture the sunrise. The streets were empty of vehicular traffic and in the distance I could see some dotted bright lights on the horizon.
It was just gone 5 and the beach area was already abuzz with activity. There were folks in various stages of undress, folks pulling out fishing nets from storage whilst some stood idly by looking into the horizon. To my right, as I stood facing the sea were the huge white walls of Cape Coast castle itself. That bit of the beach seemed to be devoid of all the activity to my left.
Not all the activities were pleasing to see. Folks still used the beach as areas to defacate.
It was, however, good to see a small group of fishermen, perhaps a father and his boys push their canoe off the sand into the sea. The canoe had been lodged in two huge logs on shore. It was fascinating to watch as the canoe was rolled off the logs into the sea.
